Never had Angel been so frustrated that he couldn't look at himself in a mirror. It wasn't as if there was anything even remotely implied in the "date" he was having with Buffy that it would be anything but a couple of old acquaintances getting together to do some talking and shopping. Buffy would be getting a little long-overdue pampering, something he knew she gave herself almost never, and he'd get to provide that for her. Nothing implied.

Right.

Angel checked his watch, the glanced out of the window. The sun had gone just far enough behind the horizon, turning the smog layer over the city into a riot of reds and golds, that he would be all right heading out. It was twenty minutes later by the time he arrived at Buffy's motel.

He'd called her not long ago, not taking "no" for an answer to the question of her taking advantage of his hospitality and not sleeping in a cheap cardboard box motel, and Angel hoped she'd listened. Adjusting his jacket and hopefully touching up his hair, he knocked on her door.

Nothing implied, he reminded himself. No expectations.

Right.

Buffy opened up the door just as Angel was fixing his hair. She did her best to cover a smirk, but failed completely. "You look fine. Come on in," she gestured to her teeny motel room.

"Um... that thing about me moving to your couch? When can that happen?" Not that she wasn't grateful; she was. She just really wanted to get out of there before the cockroaches started winning the battle against her.

Shrugging into her jacket and slipping her boots on, Buffy grabbed her purse and looked at Angel, really looked at him, for the first time in awhile. They'd said some stuff that was pretty deep for them, but she wasn't sure exactly what it all meant just yet. But, she offered him a hug, since it was the least she could do.

It felt nice to be hugged...

"Was the last time that I was in a mall with you when you were trying to have The Judge destroy everything?" And she was off and running with the awkward scale. She shut her eyes, shook her head, and pulled away from him. "Sorry. I mean... it wasn't you, I was just talking and... can we go now?"

Angel smiled sheepishly and stepped into the motel room. He had to struggle mightily not to cringe. It made the Sunnydale Hotel look like the Four Seasons. Shrugging, he gestured to the still-open door. "Just grab your stuff and throw it in the back of the car. We'll just head straight back there afterwards."

He watched silently as she finished getting read and gathering her bags. Small, casual everyday kinds of movements, but Angel couldn't have been paying any closer attention. There had been a lot of talk between them recently, and it seemed as if something or things had been said, but now that they were face to face again, all those old hesitations came right back.

Then, she hugged him, and now he was just trying not to squeeze her back too hard.

"Um, I think so?" he offered weakly. He'd lived with the idea of Angelus for more than a hundred years, Buffy for six or so. Eventually, the difference between them would be real for her, too, he knew.

"Let's go." Angel offered to carry her things down and waited as Buffy gladly checked out. It wasn't long before they were out on the freeway, cruising toward the mall, warmish air blowing over the windshield. "Do you, uh, have an idea of what you want to pick up first?" Shopping was a pretty harmless subject, he figured, and an okay start to the night.

Buffy grabbed all of her stuff that had stayed pretty much packed since the flight over from Rome and walked out, tossing it all into Angel's car just like he'd said. She looked at the key to the motel room and laughed. "I'll check out tomorrow."

She was thankful that Angel had chosen to ignore her awkward-moment-of-the-year, and really was thankful once they were on the road. Of course, close quarters with Angel had never been a bright idea in the past, but this was different, right?

Right.

"Um... not really, no," she admitted sheepishly. It had been awhile since she'd really shopped. Most of her time lately had been with the Council or with her group of commandos fighting the good fight and all that crap. Well, not crap, just... just tiring. She needed a distraction.

Buffy looked to her left and her eyes strayed down to Angel's lap. She shut them and shook her head. Bad. Bad distraction!

"You look good."

Angel's eyes widened a touch and he glanced over at Buffy, who seemed to be looking intently out the windshield. He wasn't expecting the compliment, but if there was any good time for some small talk, this was it.

"Thanks," he answered, "you, uh, you look terrific yourself."

It was mostly true. Part of him was going to be adamant that they'd go to Buca di Beppo for dinner and he was going to make her eat some carbs if he had to stare her down with every bite, but she did still look good. Very good. He was getting off-topic.

"Well, what do you need? Just casual clothes? Nice clothes? Stuff for patrol-- do you still patrol? Stuff to, um, lounge around in?"

Unless Buffy said so, they weren't going anywhere near that place with the pink bags. Angel had ducked into one on his shopping trip for Cordy and had regretted it immediately. Vampires could blush, if motivated correctly.

"Thanks," she replied back awkwardly, wondering if there was any way she could make this conversation worse than it already was. Buffy coughed a little, then fiddled with the radio until she found a Justin Timberlake song she liked. "Don't say anything. I like him, he's fun to dance to, and it makes me feel younger somehow. Just... don't ask."

Okay, so maybe she actually smiled a little after that. Maybe.

"I still patrol," she nodded. "A lot, actually. I've got some special gear for that, so I guess I'd need normal clothes. You know, the kind that Buffy Summers usually wears on patrols even if they're not comfortable for the job?" She shrugged. "It was just a thing, you know."

Angel winced. Okay, so maybe Barry Manilow wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but he liked plenty of other kinds of music. What Buffy turned on, though, made his temples ache with the distortion of whatshisname's voice and the beat that was rattling the rearview mirror. But... he was about 400 years older than most pop music listeners.

"Won't ask," he answered. Then, maybe later, she wouldn't ask about Barry.

Now, he smiled. "Like Buffy wears on patrol? Like pink leather pants?"

Oh, he remembered those very well. Even when he wasn't supposed to be looking, he was looking. "I'm sure there's plenty of places that'll fit the bill. Just hope you're not looking for anything too warm-- it's still L.A."

An awkward chuckled followed. "Gotta be honest. I'm kind of glad we're not shopping for anything, y'know, too unmentionable."

Wait, why did he say that out loud?

She rolled her eyes. "Yes, like pink leather pants. God, Angel, that was one time. One!" She smirked at him and slapped his arm playfully. "I swear, for a broody vamp, you're just such a guy sometimes."

But, the cute banter stopped as her eyes about bugged out of her face. "Um... kay... what--?" Had he really just said that? She frowned at him then, and looked away.

"Right. Right, because if we were shopping for that, then it would mean we were talking about sex, which you can't ever have because of me, oh and let's also talk about Angelus and the world almost ending and I probably looked fat to you anyway, so you wouldn't want to buy me anything unmentionable," she finally took a breath before adding, "God, Angel. Why did you have to go and ruin some fun for me? Some normal, just Buffy, shopping-fun?"

Angel's brow furrowed, his most wry expression in place. "Because it's my secret vampire power? Some have the thrall, I have the magic bring-down?"

He turned to Buffy, as best as he could while driving. "Look, I'm sorry-- we're both uncomfortable, and I thought, well, a dumb joke was better than nothing."

Pulling the car into the parking structure (no mean feat, considering how the ticket lanes weren't exactly designed for cars the size of the Belvedere), Angel found the nearest big enough parking space and came to a stop. Now he was able to really look at Buffy, which despite not usually being a good thing for his concentration, he wanted to do.

"The truth is, Buffy, even though I'm a little scared of those stores-- maybe it's all the pictures on the walls-- I'd love to buy you all the unmentionables you'd want. You're beautiful. You were then, and you are now, and... well, that's it."

Angel put his hand on the door and unlocked it. Again, somewhere in his head, it seemed a good idea to talk some more. "Plus," he added quietly, almost to himself, "I think it's not technically out of the question..."

"Wait, what?"

Buffy grabbed Angel's shoulder and yanked him towards her before he could leave. "What did you say? I mean first off, fine. Okay, maybe I'm slightly sensitive about... you know." Yeah, no need to finish that thought for him.

"And secondly, thanks. Really, because there's the whole thing about me being too skinny or..." She sighed. "Never mind. It's not important. But what is important is that last little thing you were saying that I guess you decided to just mumble so I'd hear and go completely insane with thinking about you?"

She had both hands on his chest now and was looking into his eyes that somehow always kept her trapped with that entire 'longing' look he had down pat. Of course, she was pretty sure she had it down pat, too...

Angel sighed-- which for a vampire was a particularly demonstrative thing, since there was nothing natural about inhaling and exhaling-- and covered Buffy's hands with his own. Her physical presence had already raised the temperature in the car, top down or no, but actual contact was just about jump-starting him.

He'd put his foot in his mouth, and now it was time to deal with it. Angel figured that there was no reason not to tell Buffy the truth, even if he had no idea how she'd react. But he'd learned a few lessons over the last couple of years. Maybe not well, but he did. And one of those was to be honest with someone he loved.

"The curse says 'perfect happiness'. That happens just next to never. That you and I had it once was amazing, but there's almost no way it'd happen again. Everything aligning right and like that. But now I'm different, and you're different..."

Angel pulled one of Buffy's hands up and kissed her palm. "I still love you, and I never stopped. And I have a feeling we're both a lot less perfect than we used to be, but that's good. For lots of reasons."

"Almost no way...?" She blinked her eyes at him in confusion. Perfect happines, was, what then? Taking her virginity from her? Kind of morbid, if you asked her, but Buffy listened to Angel talk.

He meant it. Every word.

"I... love you. I always have, but you knew that, I'm sure, which was why you kept wanting to talk to me that night with the whole cookie-dough thing." She could've sworn her hand tingled after he kissed it, though.

"Are you saying that... we can... that you want...?" Her eyes kept looking at his lips though, damn it.

Wow. He had not intended for their conversation to go this way. When he'd asked Buffy out on this "date", all Angel had intended was to have a nice time and give the woman a little nice treatment and pampering like she probably hadn't had in a while. The plan was definitely nowhere near getting the ultimate question for them.

But, here they were. And all he could be was honest.

"I'm saying," he said quietly, "that we could. If you wanted to. Because me wanting is not a question... at all." Because it really, really wasn't. Especially at the moment, with her actually there in front of him.

Did vampires get dry mouths? Angel sure felt as if he had one.

"I'm saying that as far as being together-- well, that much of it-- isn't something we would have to worry about anymore."

"I want. I really want." She rolled her eyes at how stupid she sounded, but it was the truth. She hadn't had sex since... oh God, Spike? Wow. And she'd only ever made love once, and that was with Angel.

Wait, did that mean they could have sex, but not make love? Oh, screw it. He was saying there was a way, and Buffy was going to jump at the chance.

"You want me... and no worries, and I want you, and so..." So Buffy climbed over ontop of Angel's lap, facing him, then bent her head down until their mouths touched.

"And so...?" Buffy's response wasn't to say anything, but to make him glad that he still hadn't put the Belvedere's top up yet by clambering into his lap. If Angel had breath, he'd have been holding it as her lips closed on his. Even though they'd kissed the last time they'd met, it was still like the very first they'd ever shared. Angel's hands circled Buffy's waist and held her against him until they parted. She, at least, had to breathe.

"And so... are we rainchecking our date, then? Because right now, I'd really much rather be back at my place."

He was pretty sure there were plenty of reasons to slow down. Angel just couldn't think of any at the moment.

Buffy's breathing was getting pretty hard, and it was pretty hard to concentrate, too, what with Angel's hands on her waist and... yeah.

She nodded at him, threading her fingers through his hair and laughing when they got stuck in whatever hair-gel he was using.

"We could always be spontaneous," she suggsted, looking around the parking lot. She looked back at him and grinned again. "Or, we could go back to your place..."

She laughed. Angel had forgotten how much he loved hearing her laugh, since there hadn't been much of that at all in the last few times they'd met, and it put an answering grin on his face. He followed her gaze around the parking lot and nodded. "Yeah, maybe not so spontaneous right now," he joked and tilted his head in the direction of the passenger seat. "Probably best to make sure you buckle up and hold on."

Usually when Angel drove the car that fast, it was because some innocent life depended on him arriving in the nick of time or earlier. Now, he was just as determined to get where he was going, but for a completely different reason. The frantic ride back to his apartment seemed to both take forever and take no time at all.

They were attached at the mouth like teenagers the entire ride up the elevator and as they scrambled down the hall and through his door. Angel stopped for a moment when it seemed like Buffy wasn't going to take a breath.

He looked at her flushed face, tousled hair and slightly rumpled clothes and sighed. "I still love you, you know."

The drive back had been "fast and furious" as the movie goes, but Buffy had been half-laughing the entire time. Since when did Angel act like he was a teenage kid about to get some for the first time? Heck, they hadn't even acted this way around each other when she was a teenager.

Back at his place, with the door shut and her throat dry, Buffy thought things couldn't get more tense, in the all-sorts-of-good way.

She was wrong.

"Oh." Breathe, breathe, breathe, she told herself as she stepped closer to him and nodded, smiling. "Ok." Great one, Buffy, she told herself until she wrapped her arms around his waist and stood on tip-toe. "Well, that's... okay, that's good. No, really, because I thought you'd stopped what with Cordelia and all and have I told you that I never stopped loving you?"

Angel was afraid that he'd put his foot in his mouth again and killed the mood, which would be all manner of ironic, especially given that he would have done it by telling Buffy he loved her. But he was pretty famous as a mood killer, so nobody should have been surprised.

Buffy's expression went confused for a moment, and she let out her answer quickly. Angel was thankful that he'd gotten back in the swing of understanding Buffy-speak since she'd gotten to town.

He smiled at her, his chest filling with about as much warmth as it would probably ever experience and put his hand against her face. Angel's fingers just barely cupped against her cheek, tilting her head just a bit up.

"No, I never stopped. Best friends and that's really all. And I really, really like that answer."

Starting to lean down to kiss her, Angel thought better of it and scooped her up into his arms until they were face to face. A moment later, they were lip to lip, and with the hungry way he kissed Buffy, he would have thought it hadn't been just twenty minutes since the last kiss. But he was unlocking feelings that had never gone away and obviously had never lost their potency, and it was making him, well, hungry.

Still carrying Buffy, he began to make his way toward the bedroom.

She giggled. Giggled. It was so un-Angel, so perfectly romantic like something out of those Harlequin books her mom used to read, but Buffy stopped giggling as soon as Angel set her down on the bed.

Now? She was completely terrified.

What do they do now? The same exact stuff they'd done about ten years ago when Angelus had decided to rear his ugly head? (Okay, technically Angelus wasn't ugly because he looked the same as Angel, but it sounded better that way in her head to Buffy.)

She pulled him on top of her and smiled, brushing at his cheeks and lips a bit before kissing him again, tugging at his clothes and still wondering how far they could go. What was perfect or not-quite-so-perfect? Would Angel know?

But in typical Buffy-fashion, as soon as his shirt was off and she felt his chest, all thoughts vanished completely.

It was about the least Hollywood-perfect beginning to a love scene ever, Angel had to admit, especially because he was in the middle of it. Somehow, despite having just had a girlfriend himself, he was awkward and almost clumsy in moving them into the bedroom and finding a spot beside Buffy on the bed. It was like she erased whatever cool he'd built up.

And if Angel was going to be honest about it, he was fine with that.

They kept kissing, stretched out next to each other, as Buffy tugged his shirt out of his pants. There was a four-way clunk as shoes were kicked off, and Angel's usually deft fingers fumbled with the buttons on Buffy's blouse. Angel came from an era where the whole backwards-button thing on women's clothes actually meant something, and he still hated it.

It didn't matter, he reminded himself. The less-than-suaveness of his technique, and their obvious shared hesitation about not stopping (that was, he was thankful, not strong enough to actually stop), none of it mattered. Buffy was there, with him, and what had been there before was still there.

Angel let his hands roam freely as they both clumsily disrobed. He always did like keeping contact with Buffy, no matter how casually, it always meant something to touch her. Finally, and with some nervous laughter on both sides, they got down to skin. Angel gazed for a second, admiring, then lay beside Buffy, gently pulling her toward him.

She shivered slightly at the cool air that touched her skin and snuggled up to Angel for warmth, forgetting for the moment that vamps just weren't all that warm. Well, unless they'd fed, because she'd remembered that one time, and...

And a light bulb went off over Buffy's head. Figuratively, of course, but still. She held Angel close to her and placed small kisses on his body, working her way around her favorite area - his chest - and then back up to his mouth where she cupped his face and smiled brightly.

"I love you." She just had to say it again, one more time. "I love you, Angel, and I want to make love to you... but there's something else I want you to do first."

Chewing on her lower lip nervously, she scooted up the bed until her neck was closer to his mouth. "Angel...? Please." He didn't need her Slayer's blood, he wasn't dying, and she didn't need pain to make her feel something anymore. But the curiousity had gotten to her. She wanted to know what it felt like to be with Angel - completely - and to have him drink not because he had to, but because he wanted to.

"Please...?"

Angel's eyes narrowed. Something she wanted him to do first? Buffy wasn't about to ask him to wear a condom or anything, they both knew there was no problem on that end. But, he wondered, was she going to ask him to wear something else? He didn't want to think about whether she'd developed-- or worse, picked up-- any habits or anything since the last time they'd been together (even though Buffy didn't remember that time, or times). There wasn't a long way to a full-blown panic when Buffy, amazingly calm, considering what she was saying, explained.

Even though she didn't say it, the meaning was clear. And it wasn't so much as a request as something the slight low tones that colored her voice implied was something deeper, something much closer to a need than a want. And even though it would be invisible to most eyes, Angel's could pick out the tiny variation in color that told him exactly where the old scar was.

Buffy's voice was almost pleading. Angel's first reaction was to draw back, horrified at the implication. But he didn't. Angel didn't move as the idea rang through his mind. Already in the last few hours things had come to pass that they had both been sure would be impossible. And though everything was still the same between them, everything was different about them.

And maybe, Angel thought, lowering his head to kiss Buffy, it meant all the old bets were off.

He shifted positions, his chest and stomach dragging smoothly against hers, Angel settled, tantalizingly close to her warmth. Angel kissed along Buffy's jaw and down to her throat where the strong, steady beat of her pulse called to him. His face slipped into its vampire form and as gently as he could, Angel pressed his fangs against her skin.

She gasped at the touch, so different from the other time when it had been full of anger and desperation. This time, it was... reverent, almsot. She was giving it to him freely because she wanted to, and he was taking it from her because he wanted to.

"Angel," she murmured softly to him, arms wrapped around him, in a very clingy-way. It hurt, naturally, but in that good sort of way. She knew he wouldn't hurt her on purpose, that he'd be careful, and when he'd vamped out on her, all she could remember was when she kissed him like that at the ice skating rink.

He'd been ashamed. She hadn't.

Her neck tilted back further as her breathing quickened, and then her legs wrapped around his trying to pull him inside her so that he could take life and give life (or some weird Anne Rice type of thing like that) all at once.

"God, yes, please... love you."

How he could actually gasp when he had his mouth locked tightly against Buffy's throat, Angel didn't know and really, couldn't care less about the technicality, because gasp is exactly what he did when in one motion, he was in her... and in her.

The initial rush of blood that spilled past his lips hit him harder than any whiskey, and burned twice as hot as it rushed into his throat and down through his body. Buffy was just as impossibly hot around him and between her legs, arms and Slayer-powered muscles all over, she was gripping him almost painfully tightly.

If Angel thought he had forgotten what it was like to feed on a Slayer, his vampire self hadn't. The lightning bolt rush of power that took over him was a lot more familiar and welcome than he ever wanted it to be. But there was something different about it this time. Last time, he was taking, and even though Buffy had been willing to give, it had been her sacrifice.

Now, as Angel felt her start to writhe under him and felt the vibration of moans and sighs under his lips, he realized he was giving right back to her.

Angel felt the flow of blood slow. He pulled back his fangs and let out something that was part groan and part growl, finding his body rolling and pushing against Buffy with an almost frantic pace. Vision narrow, all Angel could see or feel was Buffy beneath him, and it wasn't long before he found himself at the edge of the cliff.

Bending his neck, he slipped his fangs again into Buffy's throat just as he felt himself exploding inside her.
